Chance the Rapper Brings Secret Concerts to the Big Screen | Entertainment

Los Angeles — When Chance the Rapper filmed a secret concert four years ago, he intended to make a big-screen movie, but didn’t know how to edit all the footage, so he shelved the project.

However, while staying at home during a pandemic, Grammy winners had the opportunity to educate themselves on filmmaking skills. Opportunity gave him enough confidence to host and perform at several virtual concerts, including “Chi-Town Christmas,” which he wrote and directed, and to rethink the idea of making his own film.

“I had a lot of editing notes and ideas, but I didn’t know how to edit them,” he recalls. “But during the pandemic, I did a virtual concert and actually started directing myself. I learned all these skills that filmmakers have, one of which is with the editor. I was thinking about how to edit and work. I needed it. “

Today, Chance’s filmmaker’s aspirations are bearing fruit in his concert film, Magnificent Coloring World, which premieres at some AMC Theaters on August 13. The concert was filmed in his hometown of Chicago during the 2017 spectacular Coloring World Tour, shortly after winning three Grammy Awards for his 2016 independent project, Coloring Book, which won the best lap album. This project became the first award-winning streaming-only album. He also brought back the best rookie artist trophies and the best rap performances in his song “No Problem” featuring 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne.

The concert movie celebrates the 5th anniversary of “Coloring Book”.

Opportunity could have gone to the streaming service route, but he wanted to market his concert movie ideas to AMC Theaters a few months ago and immerse movie fans in his complete concert experience. I was there.

“There’s something different about going to see something in the theater instead of going to see something in bed,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to experience this in groups and on a big screen with crazy surround sound.”

Opportunity led the film editing process and self-distributed the film through his House of Kicks umbrella, which rethinks music, film and virtual experiences. His partnership with the theater chain is the first time a music artist has independently distributed a film through AMC.

Adam Aaron, CEO and President of AMC Entertainment, said: “This reminds me of unknown programming possibilities at AMC and I’m excited to pave the way for Chance the Rapper and his team.”

“Magnificent Coloring World” features a variety of stages designed by Chance and was shot on the sound stage within three and a half weeks. The rapper said he would like to tell a unique story frame by frame with the help of director Jake Schreier, who directed the 2015 movie Paper Towns.

While making a concert film, Chance said he was eager to play in front of a live audience when he saw it. He will be performing his first and only face-to-face performance at the Summerfest in Milwaukee this September.

“It made me very thirsty,” the rapper said before adding, adding that watching the movie also helped him fine-tune certain parts of his on-stage performance. He said he and those who “love the ability to experience live music” need a music festival like Summerfest.

“Looking at my performance four years ago, I’m like’I would have done this’or’I would have done it,’” he said. “I can’t wait to play this particular song right now. I see it not only as a performer, but also as a filmmaker.”

Opportunity drew inspiration for creating projects from other musicals and concert films, such as 2014’s Roger Waters: The Wall and Michael Jackson’s 1988’Moonwalker’. He thinks more musicians should consider distributing it directly to the theater.

The rapper plans to step behind the camera as a filmmaker.

“Climate can make you feel like you need to go straight to VOD or go to a small festival circuit,” he said. “But I think the theater business could use it. The filmmakers industry could also use it.”
