Take It Outdoors Adventures, a Pottstown-based recreational goods store and service company, offers a summer program to help the community experience the Schuylkill River beyond paddling.
In addition to the company’s usual services such as guided boat trips and free bike sharing, Take It Outdoors has added two new programs this season to help people enjoy the river in different ways.
The kayak fishing program combines two recreational activities into one. Anglers can throw lines through kayaks from rented kayaks. The basin discovery program allows families to learn about the local environment from the water. Below are the details of each of these programs.
Take It Outdoors offers an early bird kayak fishing program on certain Saturdays during the summer. Participating anglers get a 50% discount on boat rentals and shuttle services. Canoeing and fishing kayaks will be available to anglers in the river.
Noah Phillips, director of Take It Outdoors, said sit-on-top kayaking is often used for fishing. The boat is designed with the paddler sitting on top and inside the area surrounded by poetry with exposed legs.
“It provides more mobility. It’s easier to get gear and it’s much easier to fish,” said Philips.
To participate in the program, anglers simply bring their fishing license and the necessary fishing equipment such as poles and lures. You can then rent a kayak for $ 25 and a canoe for $ 45 from Take It Outdoors.
Boat rentals also include paddles, life vests and shuttle services. Participants will place their car at Take It Outdoors in Pottstown and then shuttle participants and all gear to the launch area of Union Meadows Park in Douglasville. Anglers row the river back to Pottstown and hopefully catch a few fish. This program is available at 8am on July 24th, July 25th, August 7th and August 8th.
Take It Outdoors has ordered more sit-on-tap kayaks for use in additional fishing programs this fall. The goal is to offer a class of kayak fishing. One class is designed for experienced anglers who want to try fishing from a kayak. There are also classes for those with limited fishing experience, and all equipment can be rented.
“It will be more directed towards children and families,” said Philips.

Take It Outdoors has partnered with the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area to help people row and explore the river’s flora and fauna.
Watershed Discovery is a riverside self-guided paddling experience as families learn about wildlife using exploration tools. Participants will use binoculars and a wildlife ID key to learn about the flora and fauna of the area as they row.
“In today’s world, our river perspectives are often from roads and highways. Basin programs allow families and individuals to experience rivers from the water and take a new perspective on natural wildlife. It can be observed from, “said Sarah Crothers, director of education at Schuylkill River Greenways.
Children under the age of 13 who submit a completed bingo card for what they saw during their natural journey will receive a Schuylkill Explorers Aquatic Kit for takeaway. The kit includes a clipboard containing activities such as basin scavenger hunts, cloud watchers, basin maps, and magnifying glass for home exploration in the Schuylkill River basin. Kits are available as long as the quantity allows.
The Basin Discovery Program will run until Labor Day this summer.
To get started, people need to book a paddling trip at takeitoutdoorsadventures.com/rentals Or call 610-656-3969. To get a 20% discount on boat rentals, please use the promotion code “water discovery 2021”.
