Wear a hat
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a wide-brimmed hat helps protect the face, ears, and neck from sun damage. Wide-brimmed hats have a wider coverage than baseball caps and are a great option. The hat can be worn outdoors at any time, so it doesn’t wear out like sunscreen. Sunscreen should be reapplied the longer you spend outdoors.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The UV Protection Factor (UPF) is the amount of UV light that a fabric can reach the skin.”
The Foundation recommends choosing fabrics with a UV protection factor of at least 30 to provide adequate protection from the sun.
Protect your eyes with sunglasses
On sunny days, it is advisable to wear sunglasses with UV protection. Rays from the sun can damage your eyes and eyesight. The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that UV light can harm “the surface tissues of the eye, the cornea, and the crystalline lens.” Eyes that have been exposed to the sun for long periods of time can develop vision loss conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
The academy recommends buying sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Many labels list UV absorption up to 400 nm. This means providing 100% protection. Sunglasses also require large lenses that completely cover the eyes for proper protection from the sun. The Academy recommends purchasing oversized or wraparound sunglasses.
Loose, lightweight and long dress
While it is instinct to wear as little clothing as possible during the summer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends covering as much skin as possible for sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation states that loose clothing is best because tight clothing stretches more and has less protection from the sun. Fabrics that provide the best protection from UV rays include denim, canvas, wool and synthetic fibers. Dark colors are not always the first choice to wear outdoors in the summer, but they do help protect your skin from UV rays. The academy recommends wearing dark or light colored clothing.
